Eternal GU195

Indoor or Outdoor | Natural Gas or Propane | Hybrid Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Eternal for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 120 F

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F

Winter Ground Temperature – 50 F

The GU195 comes in an “S” and “M” option. The “S” is for a single installation and the “M” is for multiple installations usually used for heavy commercial applications. The technology of the Eternal water heater is unique. Grand Hall USA, is the American arm of this Taiwan based company, combines a small 2 gallon water tank with condensing technology and achieves a claimed 98% efficiency.

Assuming the temperatures above and using Eternal’s flow chart, if your Winter Ground Temperature is 50 F, you should expect to get around 5.6 GPM, and if your Summer Ground Temperature is 70 F, you should expect to receive around 7.8 GPM. This really puts the GU195 into our Whole House Water Heater Category.

Some of the purported benefits of Eternal hybrid water heater technology are a reduction in the Cold Water Sandwich Effect and the ability to use less costly PFC Venting pipes because this hybrid is so good at reusing all the heat being produced. Most tankless water heaters usually have to regulate the flow of water as demand increases to keep the desired set temperature constant, but the Eternal allows water to flow fully through its system as demand increases which usually means no slight drop in hot water flow rates. Finally, the Eternal hybrid water heater units do not require any hard water cleansing annually.

Important Notes: The company requires customers to use trained installers, otherwise you risk voiding their warranties. The unit seems to make some noise, so if you and your family prefer silent operation, this is something you’d have to consider.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Eternal’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

There are only a few ratings for the Eternal GU195 (besides the numerous ones on the company’s website), Eternal seems to have recently started a Facebook Fanpage as well, and it may be worth a visit to see what others think of their units.

Total Highest Ratings: ( Here we try to give you as many sources for customer reviews as possible. We recommend a minimum of at least a total of 5 highest ratings before you even consider purchasing any unit.)

Takagi TKJR

Indoor or Outdoor | Natural Gas | Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Note: Takagi has produced a successor to the T-KJR called the T-KJR2; we’ll provide a post when there are more customer reviews available for it.

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Takagi TKJR flow rate chart and overview):

Set Temperature – 120 F

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Sinks and Faucets – 2 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F

Winter Ground Temperature – 40 F

This is a small tankless water heater. The TKJR produces 4.6 GPM during a constant 70 F Summer weather and 2.9 GPM during Winter temperatures of 40F. The Takagi TKJR is designed for a 1-2 bathroom home or apartment. You should expect the TKJR to provide enough water simultaneously for 2 points of use, one high-flow application and one low-flow application. Some examples of this would be one shower and one bathroom sink; one light water-flow shower and one laundry machine; one shower and one bathroom sink; one shower and one kitchen sink. It will provide endless water flow for one major appliance, if used one at a time. Being a gas tankless water heater, this unit does require venting. Accessories allow this unit to be installed outdoors.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Takagi’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

While some clients seem happy with the Takagi jr, a few also seem to be unhappy both with the unit and the technical support received by Takagi.

Total Highest Ratings:( Here we try to give you as many sources for Takagi customer reviews as possible. We recommend a minimum of at least a total of 5 highest ratings before you even consider purchasing any unit.)

Noritz NRC111-DV

Indoor | Natural Gas or Propane | Whole House Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Noritz for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 105 F

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F

Winter Ground Temperature – 45 F

This model uses a condensing technology, which means usually there are two heat exchanging elements, and the exhaust gas (also called flue gas) is used to heat the ground water in the first heat exchanger and then this pre-heated water is moved to the main heating element. You can see that since the pre-heat section is already making the incoming water hot, that it takes less energy to heat the water in the main heating section. This dual heat exchange system is normally a lot more efficient at boiling water, usually in the 90s efficiency range rather than the 80s range. The Thermal Efficiency of this model according to Noritz is 93.3%.

Designed to heat the whole house, this condensing tankless water heater is capable of providing up to 10.6 GPM with a Summer water supply of 70 F and 6.2 GPM with a Winter water supply of 45 F, assuming a desired set temperature of 105 F. In terms of actual usage, the NRC111 can produce hot water for 2 showers and 2 appliances during Summer and two showers and 1 appliance during Winter, assuming showers have a 2.5 GPM flow rate.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Noritz’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

There are very few ratings for the Noritz NRC111-DV, but of the few, they seem to be rather good. Noritz has a Facebook Fanpage as well, and it may be worth a visit to see what others think of their units.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus

Indoor | Electric Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Rinnai for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 120 F *

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Sinks and Faucets – 2 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F *

Winter Ground Temperature – 50 F *

* Stiebel does not assume any set or ground temperatures for their flow charts. We were told in emails that we need to make temperature rise calculations using our own set temperatures and ground temperatures for our area.

Calculations:

120 F (Set Temp) – 50 F ( WG Temp) = 70 F (Temp Rise) = 3.5 GPM

120 F (Set Temp) – 70 F ( SG Temp) = 50 F (Temp Rise) = 5.0 GPM

So during the winter, you’re looking at being able to use up to 1 shower or 1 appliance and maybe 1 low flow sink faucet. In warm climates, and up to 2 showers or 1 shower and 1 appliance.

We would not consider the tempra 36 a true whole house tankless water heater. The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus is able to handle 5 GPM with a Temperature Rise of 50 F during the summer and 3.5 GPM output with a Temperature Rise of 70 F during the Winter, assuming a set temperature of 120 F. This unit is really much more suited for a 3 person household where 1 shower and 1 low flow water fixture is required in most cases. If the ground water stays above 70 F year round where you live, then this unit will provide ample supply for simultaneous usage of two and possibly more water fixtures that average 2.5 GPM.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Stiebel’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

Many customers seem to like this model, and it appears with the 2009 versions, that there were at least a few disgruntled customers. The 2009 models according to one of Stiebel’s representatives ( Mike ), had a defect which was fixed quickly and customers affected were sent replacements.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus

Indoor | Electric Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Rinnai for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 120 F *

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Sinks and Faucets – 2 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F *

Winter Ground Temperature – 50 F *

* We emailed Stiebel and according to Ron, Stiebel does not assume any set temperatures for their flow charts and have said that we will need to calculate the temperature rise to determine the flow rate. We have therefore assumed set and ground temperatures.

According to their flow rate chart (We’re using the chart labeled “Temperature Rise F @240 V versus Flow Rate” ), it’s capable of pouring out 2.3 GPM if we assume a Winter Ground Temperature of 50 F and up to 3.25 GPM if assuming a Summer Ground Temperature of 70 F.

Calculations:

120 F (Set Temp) – 50 F ( WG Temp) = 70 F (Temp Rise) = 2.3 GPM

120 F (Set Temp) – 70 F ( SG Temp) = 50 F (Temp Rise) = 3.25 GPM

So during the winter, you’re looking at being able to use up to 1 shower or possibly 1 appliance . In warm climates, up to 1 shower or 1 appliance and possibly 1 very low flow faucet.

The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 represents the first generation and is being discontinued. The second generation models are the Tempra 24B and Tempra 24 Plus. The difference between the 1st generation and 2nd generation models is that the 1st generation only produced up to 125 degrees, whereas the newer models are capable of 140 degrees, allowing for light commercial applications like a restaurant or bar. The Tempra 24B is the basic model. The big difference between the 24B and the 24 PLUS is that the Tempra 24 PLUS has a technology called the Advanced Flow Control which keeps temperatures constant. These are electric tankless water heaters and with electric tankless hot water heaters, there’s no need to worry about purchasing or installing vents.

The Advanced Flow Control is smart enough to know when there’s a change in water usage. Usually if two or more people are in need of water, the Advanced Flow Control mechanism has a microprocessor that senses a change in flow rates, adjusts the flow rate to be slightly slower in order to maintain the constant temperature being used by the two people. The concept is that the faster the water flow, the less time the water has to contact the heating elements, the harder it is to maintain the user’s set temperature for that volume of water, therefore, slowing down the water flow rate allows the unit to keep the temperature at the desired setting. The end user may feel a slight decrease in water pressure, however, the temperature would not fluctuate.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Stiebel’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

There seem to be a good portion of very happy customers with the Stiebel. This isn’t to say there were not unhappy customers.

Total Highest Ratings: ( Here we try to give you as many sources for customer reviews as possible. We recommend a minimum of at least a total of 5 highest ratings before you even consider purchasing any unit.)

Outdoor | Natural Gas or Propane | Whole House Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Rinnai for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 120 F

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Sinks and Faucets – 2 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F

Winter Ground Temperature – 50 F

The R94Lse is meant to be installed as an outdoor tankless water heater. Using Rinnai’s R94Lse flow rate chart and the above assumptions, we estimate that the R94Lse is also able to produce approximately 8 GPM during Summer where the ground temperature is assumed to be a constant 70 F and can produce around 4.5 GPM during the Winter where the ground temperature is assuumed to be 40 F. This puts the Rinnai R94Lse in the whole house tankless water heater classification. You’ll be able to take 2 showers and use one common water consuming appliance all at the same time if you reside in climates where the ground water temperature is a steady 70 F or above. The Rinnai R94Lse, like it’s twin brother, the Rinnai R94Lsi, is a very capable natural gas whole house tankless water heater.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Rinnai’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

The R94Lse , has only 1 public customer review, yet we feel that since its twin brother (R94Lsi indoor) has received very good reviews, coupled with the high reputation of Rinnai overall, that this unit should do well in your home

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Rinnai for their flow rate chart ):

According to Rinnai’s R94LSi flow rate chart and the above assumptions, the R94Lsi is able to crank out approximately 8 GPM assuming Summer ground temperature is 70 F and 120 F Set Temperature. This puts the R94LSi in solid whole house tankless water heater territory. It should be able to output 4.5 GPM for Winter ground water that is 40 F at 120 F Set Temperature. The Winter temperatures don’t quite meet our definition of what a whole house tankless water should be able to output (6 GPM), but it’s close enough and probably good for a household that uses low flow shower heads of 1.5 GPM or less. The Rinnai R94Lsi tankless water heater is a good choice for families that often use at least 2 or more showers at the same time. If you live in areas where the temperature is stable at 70 F, this model will probably put a smile on your face. At 8 GPM for warmer climates, it could supply 3 showers simultaneously or two showers and one appliance such as a dishwasher or washing machine.

Rinnai R75LSi

Indoor | Natural Gas or Propane | Whole House Tankless Water Heater

Summary:

Assumptions ( These are assumptions made by Rinnai for their flow rate chart ):

Set Temperature – 120 F

Shower Heads / Dishwasher / Washing Machine – 2.5 GPM

Sinks and Faucets – 2 GPM

Summer Ground Temperature – 70 F

Winter Ground Temperature – 50 F

The Rinnai R75LSi tankless water heater is probably one of the most popular models in the market today. This is a natural gas tankless water heater unit that is appropriate for homes with two or three bathrooms and has a water flow rating of up to 7.5 gallons per minute (GPM). A more usable hot water flow rate range would be 6GPM with an assumed Summer ground temperature of 70 F and 4.3 GPM with an assumed Winter Ground Temperature of 50 F. Using the above assumptions, this means that during the Summer a household can expect to use 2 showers and 1 low flowing water fixture with a constant supply of hot water and in the Winter, 2 showers could be used at the same time, but most likely not more than that.

As with all gas tankless water heater models, venting is required. The Rinnai R75LSi as with many of their R series, can be used for residential or commercial purposes. The unit comes with the MC-91 temperature controller which allows the home owner to set a fixed temperature range between 98 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The commercial controller MCC-91 allows for a range of between 98 and 160 degrees.

Product Ratings: (To see our impressions of Rinnai’s customer service, go to our tankless water heater brands page)

As with any product or service, you should put heavy emphasis on customer reviews. When reading reviews, make sure you analyze the comments carefully to see signs of product reliability and good technical support. The R75LSi garners top accolades from many users from a few websites.

One thing we noted was how a technical support representative replied to customers on each of the sites below. It says a lot that a company cares enough about its public image to try to make sure issues are resolved. Browse some of the sites below to get a closer look at what end users are saying, and in some cases, how Rinnai’s technical support team responds to some of the issues brought up by customers.

Total Highest Ratings: ( We recommend a minimum of at least a total of 5 highest ratings before you even consider purchasing any unit.)

Amazon’s highest ratings total (5/5 stars) = 9

Greenerbuilding.org highest ratings total (4/4 dots)= 5

ABT highest ratings total (5/5 stars) = 3

Total Highest Ratings = 17

Note : Amazon often lumps all reviews for similar products under one product listing; we only count reviews for this specific model.
